Casinos come and go leaving behind a rich history of showbusiness.
Steve Wynn, owner and developer of Wynn Las Vegas decided that it was time to give Las Vegas real Broadway productions and opened his theater with a multi Million dollar production of the Broadway hit Avenue Q.
Set on the fictitious New York street, Avenue Q sends up popular children's television shows such as "Sesame Street" and "The Electric Company," while serving up a bounty of pop-culture. The production bears the warning: "Full puppet nudity, not suitable for children." Although a great show this attempt at Broadway in Las Vegas was not as successful as hoped, so Wynn decided to give it another try with Monty Python's Spamalot.
It was spring 2005 when casino mogul Steve Wynn first went to see "Monty Python's Spamalot" in New York as he searched for an entertainment option for his hotel-casino. Wynn sat next to Eric Idle, an original member of Monty Python and the show's creator. According to Idle, about five minutes into the musical comedy, Wynn put his hand on Idle's knee and said, "This would be great in Las Vegas." It was the easiest entertainment decision he has made in his 40-year career, the 65-year-old Wynn said at a press event. And the craziest. "I think it was one of those days when I missed my medication," he joked afterward. "I came to my senses, but it was too late." He signed the papers. The Tony Award-winning musical was adapted from the 1975 movie "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" and has done well on Broadway, London and on tour in the United States. Wynn spent $10 million refurbishing the theater that once housed "Avenue Q," increasing the number of seats from about 1,200 to 1,508 and bringing the balcony closer to the stage.
Despite the risks of going back to the Broadway well, Wynn contends that "Spamalot" is different. The Monty Python brand is world-renowned, and among its fans are baby boomers who grew up with the English comedy troupe and now represent Wynn's core customer. Wynn is so enthused about the show that he sometimes breaks into a British accent, re-creating the "bring out your dead" scene. He also takes on a gruff peasant's tone: "If he's king of all the Britons, then I'm the emperor of Norway." In Python tradition, the special effects are tacky and cheap, very different from the spectacle seen elsewhere on the Strip. That means the theater only needs to be slightly more than half-full to break even. "The killer rabbit's a hand puppet," Idle said. "You can only do low-rent jokes."
Headlining the show was John O'Hurley, of "Dancing With the Stars" fame, who played King Arthur.
Spamalot played a respectable run but was far from a smash hit and closed 2007.
Le Reve(The Dream in French) was the original named for the planned Wynn Las Vegas Hotel after Steve Wynn fell in love with and purchased the Picasso painting of the same name for $40 million. When Wynn decided on the eponymous name for the hotel he sought a theatrical production worthy of the name for his latest venture. Created by Franco Dragone, Le Reve is an amazing adventure into a surreal avant-garde world that is stunning, dynamic, sensual, and thrilling.
Le Reve is set in a 1 million gallon water-oriented in the round theater where no seat is more than 40 ft (12 m) from the stage. When initial response to the show was less than spectacular, Wynn, ever the perfectionist, bought the rights to the show and redesigned and redeveloped the show personally to become more in line with the tastes of Las Vegas visitors.
Early 2009 former Mirage headliner Danny Gans moved to the resort. Gans moved into the theater formerly used by both Avenue Q and Spamalot, which was renamed Encore Theater and was marketed as part of the Encore expansion.
The show was finding it's feet just a few months after opening when shockingly Gans died on May 1, 2009. The sudden death of Encore headliner Danny Gans reminded some of the 2003 tiger attack that ended the Siegfried & Roy show at the Mirage.
A few days after the memorial, Encore Theatre was open for business, this time with Whoopi Goldberg. Beyonce is scheduled for some shows soon, and Larry King, too. A spokeswoman for Encore said there are no plans for another resident headliner, but a series of short-term headliners will likely do stints in the theater. Vegas is a city that even on its saddest days still moves forward.
