DANNY GANS
He will be missed
Dnny Gans: Daniel Davies Gans (October 25, 1956 - May 1, 2009) was an American singer and comedian who found success as a vocal impressionist.
Danny Gans was a headliner / impersonator on the Las Vegas Strip for many years, where he was billed as "The Man of Many Voices".
He had been named Las Vegas Entertainer of the Year, and his production had also been awarded Show of the Year. As these awards would indicate, his fame was largely centered in Las Vegas.
At one time, Gans was a professional baseball player. He was drafted by the Chicago White Sox after being named an All-American at California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo where he was a Physical Education major. It was at Cal Poly that he met his wife, Julie. Later, he held a small role as a third baseman in the film Bull Durham. After an injury ended his sporting career Gans turned to the entertainment industry. Gans began his career on the road, performing mostly at private corporate functions.
Gans spent 15 years traveling throughout the United States, working at his craft and perfecting his repertoire of impressions. At the same time he became one of the most sought-after performers in the prestigious corporate world, often playing to stadium-sized crowds for major, international companies such as IBM and McDonald's and was the favorite of the Fortune 500 list. Fellow entertainers such as Bill Cosby and Natalie Cole raved about Gans, and it became apparent that he was destined to be a star.
In 1995, he moved to New York to perform a well-received one-man Broadway show, but later decided to move to Las Vegas to reduce time away from his family, who lived in Los Angeles.
Gan's talent was unmistakable. His history in Las Vegas goes back to a time he opened for Bill Cosby at The Hilton. Danny was supposed to do 30 minutes. Towards the end of his bit, Cosby walked on stage and introduced Danny Gans to the audience as the New Sammy Davis Jr. With that said Cosby told Gans to keep going and he performed for another 30 minutes. The next day, Bill Cosby had the marquee changed to make Gans name equal to his own.
Gans started his Las Vegas stay at the Stratosphere Hotel in 1996. He moved to the Rio Hotel shortly thereafter, and t hen on to The Mirage in 2000. Gans was a permanent performer at The Mirage, where the Danny Gans Theatre was built specifically for him.
In May 2008 Danny Gans celebrated 12 years in Las Vegas, the last eight of which have been spent in his own 1,250-seat theater at the Mirage. And, once again, Gans was named "Las Vegas Entertainer of the Year" for the 11th straight year in a row.
In February 2009, Gans changed venues again, and performed at Encore, the sister property to Wynn Las Vegas.
Gans died on May 1, 2009 at his home in Henderson, Nevada. The cause of death was a drug toxicity caused by the combination of hydromorphone (an opiate, commonly marketed under the name Dilaudid) and a pre-existing heart condition. Gans had three children, Andrew, Amy and Emily.
